Protecting marine life with DUBAI REEF
Dubai’s commitment to marine conservation
About DUBAI REEF
Driving sustainability with marine conservation
Launched in 2024, DUBAI REEF is a pioneering purpose-built reef development and one of the largest in the world that aims to increase marine biodiversity and protect the emirate's coastal ecosystems. The initiative will see over 20,000 reef modules deployed across 600km2 to restore marine habitats and support the growth of indigenous species. DUBAI REEF is advancing Dubai's long-term commitment to global marine conservation – taking action today to protect marine ecosystems for generations to come.

Marine habitat restoration
A network of purpose-built reef modules is being deployed to support marine ecosystems and provide thriving habitats for diverse fish species – enhancing resilience for long-term ocean health. By 2027, 20,000 reef modules, each uniquely designed to support different marine species, will be introduced to the waters to encourage growth and biodiversity.
Marine life rehabilitation
Focusing on supporting the growth of indigenous marine species and enhancing biodiversity in Dubai's waters, this pilot began with a coral restoration programme. Coral fragments are cultivated in a dedicated 200 sqm nursery under closely monitored conditions. Once matured, the corals are transplanted onto coastal rock formations, where they continue to grow and provide vital support to a variety of marine species.
Marine conservation research
DUBAI REEF aims to serve as a research hub for marine conservation and innovation, and will bring together global best practices and scientific rigour to guide every aspect of the project – from ecological and climate modelling to material innovation and long-term reef management. This approach ensures measurable impact and relevance on a global scale.
Why it matters
Preserving our future
As part of Dubai’s contribution to global efforts to protect marine biodiversity, DUBAI REEF highlights the importance of local action in addressing the growing pressures on ocean ecosystems. Research shows that 14% of the world’s coral reefs have been lost since 2009, and up to 90% are at risk of disappearing by 2050. Coral reefs support around 25% of all marine species and are vital to the overall health of ocean ecosystems. DUBAI REEF is a long-term initiative focused on enhancing these ecosystems through targeted marine habitat development. This initiative reflects Dubai’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. It aligns with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, the UAE’s Green Agenda 2030, and several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
